Michelle Russell, Security Industry Authority (SIA) CEO, said at The Security Event that “responsible buying of security by venues and businesses has to be a higher priority.”

Michelle Russell attended and spoke at the professional security officers live on 25 April at The Security Event at the NEC Birmingham.

She talked about the important role professionally trained front line security officers do every day protecting the public, premises and property across the UK.

She said: “Security is not and cannot be treated as a grudge purchase. It’s essential.

“The responsible buying of security by venues and businesses has to be a higher priority and with Martyn’s law on the way, it’s a game changer that must lead to lasting changes with venues and buyers recognising the role and importance of professional security in ensuring and delivering on public safety.”

Ms Russell also covered some of the changes the Security Industry Authority (SIA) has made over the last few years to the entry level training, training assessments, unannounced inspections on training provides, and their increased enforcement activity.

She said: “Also, looking ahead to future SIA plans including more guidance and support for front line officers and the importance of responsible buying of security – not based on lowest cost decisions but quality and public safety delivery and assurances.”

Ms Russell also mentioned the panel session before her discussing the changes the security industry has made on making it more inclusive and the changes still needed, including making it more divers at senior levels.

She commented: “We are pleased to be supporting some of the industry led activities talked about.”

Questions and challenges from security officers listening included how choices on food and refreshments on long shifts need to improve and how can they get more involved in developing security inclusion initiatives.
