Thieves attacked security guard at Sainsbury’s after breaking into the store

Thieves at a supermarket fled before returning and attacking a security guard.

An eyewitness witnessed the “shocking” first part of the incident at Sainsbury’s in Fortis Green Road on Sunday (July 23).

Police were called to the store at around 5pm after receiving reports of antisocial behaviour.

The Metropolitan Police said a security guard told officers that four men had entered the supermarket before stealing various items and fleeing the scene.

One eyewitness who was in the store at the time told Ham and High that the incident “did seem to kick off quite a bit”.

They added: “It’s quite shocking – you don’t expect that in Muswell Hill”.

Later that day, the suspects returned, broke into the store and attacked a security guard, leaving him with a facial injury.

Police searched the area for the assailants, but could not find them.

A police spokesperson said officers are still investigating the incident.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “The safety of our colleagues and customers is our highest priority.

“Police were called to our Muswell Hill store on Sunday evening and we are helping with their investigation in any way we can.”
